Normandale Preschool is licensed through the Department of Human Services and a member of The Evangelical Lutheran Education Association (ELEA). We are licensed to serve 75 students per session with a total enrollment of 150 students. The student/teacher ratio is no more than 1 to 10 for children ages three to five years.
Our teachers are well-educated early childhood professionals who model their Christian faith daily within the classroom. All participate in programs of continuing education for professional advancement in Early Childhood Education.
JoAnne, has a Masters Degree in Education from Hamline University as well as a B.A. in Elementary Education with Certification in Parent and Family Education. Before coming to Normandale Preschool, in 2006, JoAnne was an Early Childhood Family Education Administrator in the public school. Throughout her career, she has taught preschool through college age students. JoAnne and her husband have three young adult children. They enjoy travelling to visit their children throughout the U.S and the world.
Jean, has a B.A. in History from St. Olaf College and an M.A. in Education from the University of Michigan. Before coming to Normandale Preschool in 2010, Jean was the Senior Secretary in the Department of German, Scandinavian and Dutch at the University of MN. Jean is a member of Normandale Lutheran Church where she attends with her husband and children, who are alumni of Normandale Preschool.
Emily graduated with a BA from the University of Colorado, Boulder. After moving to California, she soon found herself creating daily lesson plans and managing a classroom of preschool age students. She feels that a play based program is important as students work on their social and emotional skills while learning language and pre-reading skills through intentional play. After seven years at Gingerbread Preschool in California, she now joins the Normandale Preschool staff.
Alicia, has a BA in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from the University of Northern Colorado. Her history includes that of Lead Preschool Teacher in Omaha, Nebraska, as well as substitute teacher in Cheney, Nebraska. Alicia took an active role in the lives of her children as a Sunday School Teacher, Girl Scout Leader and Classroom Volunteer. She loves reading historical fiction as well as travel books and of course traveling whenever possible.
Madam Hargitt is a native French speaker and one of the founders of Normandale French Immersion Elementary School. She has taught primary school in Lausanne, Switzerland, and in a Swiss French school in Bogata, Columbia. Madam Hargitt taught kindergarten at the Edina, French Immersion School. We are pleased to have her join us at Normandale Preschool as she offers French Fun, Mais Oui, a French Immersion Enrichment opportunity for Normandale Students.
Sheri has a BA in Elementary Education with certification in both Preschool and Kindergarten from the College of St. Benedict. Her work experience includes teaching at many levels including Kindergarten, Montessori and Headstart. Along with her love for children, Sheri brings her gift of music and art to the classroom. Sheri teaches our T.W.TH mixed age 3's and 4's class as well as our STEM class.
Michele is licensed in both Kindergarten and Elementary and has a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Minnesota. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Her most recent teaching experience was at Aquila Primary Center where she taught both Kindergarten and First Grade. Michele brings with her experience in teaching gifted and talented students and has a strong team teaching background. Michelle joined the Normandale Preschool staff in 2011.
Dawn is the Lead Teacher in the 4 day 4 year old classroom. Dawn's children are alumni of Normandale Preschool! Dawn graduated, Magna Cum Laude, from St. Cloud University and has since worked as a paraprofessional in the Bloomington Public Schools. She has worked in Kindergarten, EBD, DC and ASD classrooms.
Marlene Smith has a B.S. in Elementary Education with Preschool Endorsement from Crown College. Throughout her career she has taught at the preschool, kindergarten and elementary levels in various Christian schools throughout our state. She believes that having activities that are engaging, fun and curiosity-driven, increases student learning about themselves, God's love and the world around them.
Kristen graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BA in Child Psychology and a license in Early Childhood Education. Her experience includes teaching at Good Samaritan Nursery School as a Lead Teacher and at Especially For Children. Both of her children are alumni of the preschool. Kristen began her long history of teaching at Normandale Preschool in 1999.
Mrs. Gerten has a BA in Social Work from Bethel University. She has worked in the Early Childhood Family Education Program at Minnetonka Public Schools and with Special Education students at the World Lerner School in Chaska, adapting and modifying curriculum as needed to meet the educational needs of students.
Christine graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and continued her education at Augsburg College where she received her teaching certification. Christine’s family has a historical connection to Normandale Preschool in that her mother, Arloine Johnson, was the founder of our school over 40 years ago! Christine joined the Normandale Preschool staff in 2013, the year of our 40th anniversary.
Diane graduated from St. Olaf College with a BA in Home Economics Education. She is a member of Normandale Lutheran Church and her now adult children are alumni of Normandale Preschool. Diane was a substitute at the school for many years. She began her more full time employment at Normandale Preschool in 2005.
Keri holds a M.A. in Speech Language Pathology from the School of Allied Health in Kansas, and a B.A. in Speech, Language & Hearing from the Univeristy of Kansas. She started her career as a Speech Language Pathologist at Bethany Medical and Health Midwest in Kansas. After moving to Edina, she became involved in the life of her children volunteering on the CPC Leadership Committee and chairing the Vision Screening taking place at Concord Elementary. Keri attends Christ Presbyterian Church with her family where they are active in a variety of ongoing activities.
Bonnie, received her B.A. from the University of MN. Her career began in marketing, but Bonnie continues to be very involved in the lives of her children having served as President of the Edina, PLC, President of the Creek Valley Parent Teacher Association and Co-Chair of the Creek Valley Carnival. Bonnie attends Wooddale Church, where she has been a VBS volunteer and remains active with her family.
